"WRITING A RESEARCH PROPOSAL AND PUBLICATION IN IMPACT JOURNALS"

The inaugural 2024 CRISD knowledge-sharing session, organised by Dr. Irina Wong Ming Ming and Mr. Chin Kai Long, featured esteemed guest speaker Assoc. Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Azwan Iskandar Azmi from University Malaysia Perlis.
The session aimed to empower researchers by exploring the methods of crafting research proposals and achieving publication success in impact journals. Dr. Azwan shared insights on developing robust research proposals, emphasising well-defined research questions, methodologies, and anticipated contributions. Additionally, participants gained essential strategies for navigating the editorial process and honing writing skills to maximise the visibility and impact of their research findings.

Representing the Centre for Research of Innovation and Sustainable Development (CRISD) was the CRISD’s Head: Prof Ir Dr Mohd Shahril Osman, Deputy Head: Dr Geno Peter and the CRISD’s Research Cluster’s Leads: Ts Ms Nurhayatie Sajali, Ts Ir Dr Tonny Ling Heng Yew, TS. Dr Yong Ching Yee and Dr Irina Wong Ming Ming. Besides, our School Safety coordinator, Mdm Zalikha Raman together with Mr Abdul Ismail which is the Head of Marketing, Event & Webpage for School of Engineering and Technology joined the discussion with MGTC.
During the event, the delegation has visited some of UTS’s Labs, guided by Mr Abdul Ismail & Ms Siti Nadhira also some of the technicians, for some information regarding the types and usage of the machines & facilities.




CRISD SHARING SESSION
HYPERSPECTRAL IMAGING FOR PRECISION AGRICULTURE
Date: 27.10.2022
On 27 October 2022, CRISD has again organised a knowledge-sharing session via ZOOM. This time the speaker was Assoc Prof Dr Chidambaram from the School of Engineering and Technology, CHRIST University, Bengaluru, India.
The session gave an opportunity for attendees to learn that the imaging is utilizing the electromagnetic spectrum range of 400 to 2500 nm. Adidtionally, Dr Chidambaram had talked on the promising application of the hyperspectral imaging to mitigate various agricultural problems, including identifying plant diseases. Dr Chidambaram’s session was another great intellectual session with attendees coming not only from UTS but also from the UMK, IIUM, as well as from UiTM Sabah. Some CHRIST University’s own students and personnel had also attended the talk.
CRISD would like to thank Dr Chidambaram and all the attendees for their interest and participation in this session.


CRISD SHARING SESSION
BIOMASS AND BIOFUEL: ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECTS AND CHALLENGES

On the 25th of August 2022, CRISD has again organised a knowledge sharing session via ZOOM. This time the speaker was our own Dr Abu Saleh Ahmed who is an Associate Professor at the School of Engineering and Technology.
The session gave an opportunity for the attendees to discover more about the potentiality of biomass and biofuel research. Dr Saleh begins the session by introducing the different categories of biomass and biofuels. Later, throughout the session, Dr Saleh had presented extensively on green biodiesel. Dr Saleh finished his session off by presenting various other issues that are related to biomass and biofuels that is worth to be studied and explored.
Dr Saleh’s session was another great intellectual session with a turnout of nearly 40 attendees. The talk has attracted not just UTS own community of staffs and students but also staff and postgraduate students from other universities including Curtin Malaysia (Miri Campus), UiTM, UTM and IIUM. Individual professionals from institutions such as Jabatan Kerja Raya, Sarawak Energy Bhd and Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd have been joining the online sharing session as well.
CRISD would like to thank all the attendees for their interests and participation in this session. CRISD is aiming to provide more online sharing session in the near future.




CRISD SHARING SESSION
ACOUSTOFLUIDIC: THE APPLICATIONS OF MHz ACOUSTIC WAVES
Date: 28.07.2022
On the 28th of July 2022, CRISD has organised a knowledge sharing session via the ZOOM platform. The speaker was Ir Dr Tan Ming Kwang, who is a senior lecturer from the School of Engineering, Monash University of Malaysia.
The session gave an opportunity for the attendees to have a look at Dr Tan’s acoustofluidic research, particularly on microfluidics agitation via surface acoustic waves. During the session, Dr Tan firstly introduced the working principle of the surface acoustic waves (SAW) itself. Later during the session, Dr Tan presented some applications including separation via microcentrifugation, nebulisation, germination and water treatment.
Dr Tan’s session was a great intellectual session with a turnout of nearly 50 attendees, not just from the UTS own academic staff but also the public and postgraduate students from other Universities.

On the 14th of June 2022, the Institute of Tropical Aquaculture Hatchery UMT (AKUATROP – UMT) has paid a courtesy visit to the University of Technology Sarawak (UTS). The delegations from UMT are Prof Lam Siu Hsiung, Prof Dr Mhd Ikhwanuddin, Prof Meisam Tabatabaei and Dr Wan Adibah.
Representing the Centre for Research of Innovation and Sustainable Development (CRISD) was the CRISD’s Director: Prof Ir Dr Mohd Shahril Osman and the CRISD’s Research Cluster’s Leads: Ts Ms Nurhayatie Sajali, Ts Ir Dr Tonny Ling Heng Yew, Assoc Prof Dr Augustine Chioma Affam and Dr Irina Wong Ming Ming.
During the event, the delegation has visited some of UTS’s Labs, guided by the lecturers also technicians, for some information regarding the types & usage of the machines and facilities. The event continued by the LOI signing after some discussion about the ongoing & current research activities involving both UTS and UMT.

UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY SARAWAK (UTS) 6TH CONVOCATION CEREMONY

“New Norms, New Opportunities” was the theme for the 6th UTS Convocation as a reminder to always seek advantage that comes from a difficult situation. The Covid-19 pandemic has impacted the nation’s education in unprecedented ways. UTS has strived to adapt to the new norm by facing the challenges that stem from the difficult situation head on, turning it into an opportunity for innovative learning that cultivate excellence in teaching and learning through integrating technology and state-of art pedagogy to achieve its vision and missions.
This year, the convocation ceremony was inaugurated by the Chancellor of UTS, Tuan Yang Terutama Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud on the first session while on the second session, the ceremony was attended by the Chairman, Board of Governors, YB Dr Annuar Bin Rapaee who also a scroll presenter to the graduates.
The ceremony fully complies with the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) outlined by the government during the 2 sessions. This includes social distancing, scanning the MySejahtera apps and sanitising hands prior to entering the ceremony’s venue.
In addition, this year over 300 students (about 150 students per session) attending the long-awaited day while witnessed by their parents. Besides, awards have been presented to the students with outstanding achievements.

CRISD WEBINAR 2022
THE BIOTICS FAMILY & YOUR HEALTH
Date: 26.01.2022

On the 26th of January 2022, CRISD has organised a webinar via the ZOOM platform. The speaker was Mr Koh Chen Chung, who is a lecturer in the Food Technology Programme, School of Engineering and Technology, University of Technology Sarawak. He is also a CRISD researcher under Bioresources Cluster. Mr Koh is doing research in probiotics, specifically on synthesising probiotics from the locally produced food.
This talk instils the knowledge about the importance of prebiotics in disease prevention & health promotions in human and to raise awareness of prebiotics & prebiotic research among UTS community.
The audience was the lecturers, students and public. The talk received good feedback from the audience during the live talks.
